Until Saturday, Latvia has registered two asylum applications from Russians fleeing mobilization & More Latest News Here

Latvian authorities revealed that two Russian citizens have requested asylum in the country on Saturday, September 24.

The Ministry of the Interior of Latvia explained that the asylum applications were received after the mobilization of Russia, reports SchengenVisaInfo.com.

However, despite receiving these two requests, the authorities made it clear that they would not grant asylum to those fleeing Hiraka.

According to Latvian Public Radio (LSM), Interior Minister Kristaps Eklons said that mobilization in Russia is not a sufficient basis for granting asylum in the country.

In addition, the minister stated that each case will be evaluated individually, and at the same time stated that mass asylum has never been granted in Latvia and will not be done in the future.

LSM explains that the State Border Guard has already strengthened border control in order to prevent the crossing of the border by Russian citizens who are trying to avoid mobilization.

In addition to receiving two asylum applications, the Ministry of the Interior revealed that since September 19, when the entry ban officially came into force, the country has refused entry to a total of 23 Russian citizens.

On September 19, Latvia, together with the other Baltic states and Poland, imposed a ban on entry into Russia and stopped issuing them Schengen visas.

According to the regulations in force in Latvia, Russian citizens who have a Schengen visa issued by Latvian authorities or any other country are prohibited from entering. However, the authorities did not apply some exceptions.

When these strict measures came into effect, authorities reported a dramatic drop in the number of Russians trying to cross the border. The government announced this week that since September 19, the number of Russian citizens who have tried to enter Latvia has reached almost 1,000.

In addition, in the same order, it was clarified that 27 of the Russians who tried to cross the border had C visas, seven percent had D visas, 53 percent had residence permits issued to family members of Latvian citizens, and 13 to all others. A hundred of them were sailors who could not abandon ship.

Similar to Latvia, the other two Baltic states, Lithuania and Estonia, have announced that they will not grant asylum to Russian citizens fleeing mobilization. The foreign ministers of the three Baltic states said that no special treatment will be applied to Russians fleeing their country to avoid mobilization.
