Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Image Sees Spider-Man 2099 Charging into Multiversal Battle
Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099 will play a much larger role in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The latest image from the upcoming animated sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, offers a closer look at Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099. And he is looking pretty menacing, and he races into action as leader of the Spider-Force. Released via social media, the image should have audiences excited to see Spider-Man 2099 play a much larger role in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which finds Miles Morales thrown headfirst into the madness of the multiverse.
The menacing look of Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099, a variant from an alternate future who was introduced at the end of 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, does not bode well for Miles, with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writer and producer Christopher Miller stating that he will play an antagonist role in the sequel. “He’s not the villain of the movie, but he’s sort of an antagonist to Miles because they both think that what they’re doing is the right thing,” Miller revealed.
Created by Peter David and Rick Leonardi in 1992 for Marvel Comics, Miguel O’Hara grew up in a futuristic New York City many years after the modern-day era of Marvel heroes, now known as the “Heroic Age.” The head of a state-of-the-art genetics program, O’Hara hopes to one day create another Spider-Man-esque hero and ends up changing his own genetic code to 50% spider DNA, and giving himself spider-like abilities.
Oscar Isaac will reprise the role of Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and has described the character as “the one Spider-Man that doesn’t have a sense of humor.” Another element that does not bode well for Miles Morales. The leader of the Spider-Force, Spidey 2099 and Miles find themselves at odds with each other.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Will Swing into Theaters Later This Year
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse begins with Miles Morales reuniting with Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman. Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is soon catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero, so he can save the people he loves most.
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stars Shameik Moore as Miles Morales aka Spider-Man, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker aka Spider-Man, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman, Daniel Kaluuya as Hobart “Hobie” Brown aka Spider-Punk, and Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar aka Spider-Man India.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released on June 2, 2023. A further sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is scheduled for release on March 29, 2024.
