Search the air, sea and land of the Firth of Thames for a missing kayaker

Mangroves on the coast near Kaiaua.

A large-scale search is underway in the Firth of Thames after a kayaker failed to return home last night.

Police said the man left Kaiaua, east of Pōkeno, around 3 p.m. on Saturday and planned to go to nearby mussel farms for fishing.

But the man was reported missing by his family last night when he did not return.

The Coast Guard, Police Eagle Helicopter and Maritime Unit began searching the area last night. A plane joined the effort today.

The man’s kayak and fishing gear were found early this morning about 3 miles east of Orere Point, about 12 miles north of Kaiaua, in the Auckland region.

Police said they would like to hear from anyone who has seen anything in the area that could provide information to aid in their search by calling 111.
