Safaricom cuts prices on 4G Wi-Fi routers to make internet connectivity accessible to more Kenyans

This move comes as part of Safaricom’s ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide in Kenya and enable more people to access the internet from the comfort of their homes. With more affordable routers, the company hopes to make internet connectivity more accessible and affordable for millions of Kenyans. The routers can be purchased directly from the MySafaricom app, Safaricom shops, or dealers, as well as through a USSD code.

To sweeten the deal, Safaricom is also offering 30 GB of free data for 30 days with each router purchased. This means that customers can enjoy the online experiences they love without worrying about data costs. The offer is available to both new and existing Safaricom customers.

The price cut is expected to drive the adoption of home internet connectivity in Kenya, which has been growing steadily in recent years but still lags behind many other countries in the region. According to the Communications Authority of Kenya, the number of fixed broadband subscriptions in the country stood at just 161,938 as of June 2021, compared to over 4 million mobile broadband subscriptions.

Safaricom’s move is part of a broader push to expand internet access and drive digital inclusion in Kenya. Last year, the company rolled out 5G networks in five counties, enabling customers to access faster internet speeds. The areas were Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisii, Kakamega, and Kisumu. Faster than a 4G network, clients are able to download, stream, and play video at neck-breaking speeds.

Safaricom currently has 35 active 5G sites spread across Nairobi, Kisumu, Kisii, Kakamega, and Mombasa, with plans to expand further in the coming months. The company is also working on providing 5G data packages for mobile internet customers and leveraging the Lipa Mdogo Mdogo device-financing solution to make more affordable 5G smartphones available to Kenyans.
