Putin calls on the leaders of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to avoid further escalation & More Latest News Here

“Vladimir Putin called on the countries to prevent further escalation of the situation and to take steps to resolve the situation as soon as possible through exclusively peaceful, political and diplomatic means,” the Kremlin statement said.

Almost half of the 970 km long border between the two impoverished, mountainous Central Asian neighbors is contested, with constant fighting.

The two countries agreed to a ceasefire on Friday, and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon spoke with Kyrgyz leader Sadyr Japarov at a summit in Uzbekistan.

But just a few hours later, both sides fired back at each other accusing each other of violating the ceasefire.

On Saturday morning, Kyrgyz border guards accused the Tajik army of attacking several border districts and settlements, including the southern regions of Batken and Osh.

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from border areas in Kyrgyzstan.

Kyrgyzstan’s health ministry said on Sunday that at least 36 people had been killed and 134 wounded in recent days of clashes along the border with Tajikistan.

Tajikistan’s interior ministry said civilians had been killed in the clashes, but did not give an exact number.

Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are members of the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), but they are in constant conflict.

In 2021, at least 50 people were killed in unprecedented clashes between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

The latest clashes have fueled fears of yet another conflict in the former Soviet region. More than 210 people have been killed in clashes between Armenian and Azerbaijani soldiers this week.
