Officers kill Dripping Springs man who wielded knife, injure 78-year-old woman, authorities say

A 28-year-old man from Dripping Springs was shot and killed in front of a home Saturday morning by Hays County deputies. A 78-year-old woman was also injured in the encounter, authorities said.

The sheriff’s office said officers had initially responded to the 1300 block of Trinity Hills Drive in the Belterra subdivision, where there was a report of a disturbance between a man and a tow truck driver.

“A short time later, officers responded to the 100 block of Victoria Court for a follow-up investigation into the disturbance,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement on Saturday. Just then, a man, identified by the sheriff’s office as John File, emerged from the Victoria Court residence and charged at officers with a knife, authorities said.

One of the officers fired several shots and fired File. The 78-year-old woman in the home was shot in the arm, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities have not said how she was related to File.

Both File and the woman were taken to hospital, where File was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m. The woman was treated for her injuries, authorities said.

The Texas Rangers help investigate the shooting, which, according to the sheriff’s office, is standard policy when a deputy has used deadly force.
