Matawalle visits spinal cord injury patient after successful surgery in Abuja

Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle of Zamfara state has paid an unexpected visit to see how a spinal cord injury patient, Jamilu Bako, is recuperating after a successful surgery in a private specialist hospital in Abuja.

An aide to the governor, Lawal Umar Maradun, said on Sunday that the governor assisted the patient to be treated by the hospital.

The patient had been bedridden for over seven years following a spinal cord injury and fractures on his forearms in an accident between Gusau and Tsafe, Zamfara state. 

Governor Matawalle sympathised with the patient and prayed to Almighty Allah for his speedy recovery. He admonished Bako to take what happened as a destiny from Allah and accept it in good faith.

The governor said there was need for people to offer prayers for return of peace in various parts of the country, adding that Nigerians should be patriotic towards the success of government in all aspects, including healthcare delivery.

He appreciated the efforts of the team of doctors at the Alliance Hospital, who worked on Jamilu Bako for almost six hours during the surgery.

Governor Matawalle stated that well-to-do Nigerians should desist from medical tourism abroad and patronise Nigerian hospitals.

Earlier, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) Alliance Hospital, Dr. Christopher Otabor, said the hospital has carried out critical surgeries and operations including over 60 kidney transplants. 

The patient, Jamilu Bako, expressed his joy and gratitude to the governor and prayed for success in his fight against insecurity in the state. 

He thanked the governor for putting smiles on his face after several years of suffering, adding that throughout the period he had not been able to lift his right hand, shake his right foot or have feeling on the toes.

He however, disclosed that, he was able to move the leg and lift up his hand and had feelings immediately after the surgery.

Governor Matawalle was accompanied during the visit by the former senator of Zamfara central, Senator Kabiru Garba Marafa, CON, and the Senator representing Zamfara West, Senator Lawali Hassan Anka. 

Others are Commissioner for Commerce, Hon. Yazid Shehu Umar Danfulani, Special Adviser on Protocol, Hon. Aliyu S Pawa, as well as his private secretary, friends, and associates.
