Roberto Firmino has reportedly informed Jurgen Klopp that he will leave Liverpool when his contract expires at the end of the season.
The Reds have been in talks to extend Firmino’s contract for quite a while now with fans understandably eager to see the Brazilian stay.
It was reported last month that Liverpool were ‘superbly positioned’ to agree fresh terms with the forward, though he has been linked with a move to Turkey this week.
Multiple reports have said that Galatasaray are keen and are expected to hold talks with Firmino’s representatives.
Turkish outlet A Spor claimed that the 31-year-old has ‘started to collect information’ about Galatasaray and is ‘looking forward’ to joining them.
Despite talks over a new deal, it has been reported that Firmino is set to leave Liverpool this summer.
Firmino has ‘informed’ Reds boss Klopp of his decision during a ‘good talk’ on Friday.
This means the Brazil international will depart as a free agent, making him a pretty desirable player this summer.
Liverpool paid around £33million to sign Firmino from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in July 2015.
He has had an incredibly successful time in England, scoring 107 goals and providing 78 assists in 352 matches.
Firmino has won seven trophies with the Merseyside club, including the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.
The experienced forward has missed a large chunk of this season through injury.
He made his return from his latest setback late on in the 2-0 Premier League win over city rivals Everton last month.
Firmino is yet to start a match for Klopp’s side since getting back to full fitness.
This term has actually been one of his best scoring campaigns for the Reds. He has seven goals in 16 Premier League appearances.
Firmino has always been a fan favourite at Anfield and is one of very few to play for Liverpool during the entirety of Klopp’s tenure.
Klopp has a lot of forwards at his disposal, though none are out-and-out strikers or can play that false-nine role like Firmino.
Signing at least two midfielders is a top priority for the Reds going into the summer transfer window, while you would expect Klopp to prioritise a new centre-half over a new forward.
Liverpool signed Cody Gakpo from PSV in January and Darwin Nunez from Benfica last summer.
