Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) and ex-Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara, has expressed concern over reports of mass resignations from the party by top, key members, especially in the South East zone.
But he said everything was being done to address the development even as he accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to turn Nigeria into a one-party country, asserting that such venture would be resisted.
Wabara, who spoke in reaction to the reported resignations, alleged that the APC was using some persons he described as elements in the PDP to disintegrate his party.
Wabara said the PDP BoT would act swiftly and halt further members’ exit, saying: “The BoT, which is the conscience of the PDP, would not allow self-seeking individuals to be used by the ruling party to destabilise the PDP.
He added: “The BoT will never allow the APC to use some characters in the PDP to turn this beautiful and sweet nation into a one-party state. The BoT will wade in expeditiously to save the deliberate and planned extinction of this great party, with our array of distinguished men and women of invaluable experience and integrity, the BoT will surely salvage the party. Like we once did it, we shall do it again no matter whose ox is gored.”
Reportedly, former Governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha, recently resigned his membership of the PDP, hinging his reason on the PDP National Secretary position controversy.
Shortly after his resignation, many key members and officials of the Imo State PDP chapter followed him, including some national officers of Imo State origin, such as BoT member, Chief Chris Okewulonu, four zonal officers, namely Mr Stanley Ekezie, Chief Austin Okeke, Chief Emeka Nwokeke, and Mrs Ruth Nkwocha, among others.
MEANWHILE, a pro-democracy group, The Democratic Front (TDF) has advised PDP to steer clear of ongoing efforts by the Tinubu administration to reposition the country towards sustainable growth and development.
Led by Danjuma Mohammed, TDF, while reacting to the communique issued by the PDP at the end of its National Executive Committee meeting, argued that the country had still not recovered from the mindless plundering of the economy in the PDP years.
TDF contended that the PDP could not arrogate to itself the knowledge to deliver on the nation’s economy, having plunged it into ruins for 16 years. TDF said rather than chieftains of the PDP burying their heads in shame because of the roles they played in bringing the country to its knees, it’s unfortunate that they were busy pontificating on the reforms being initiated by the Tinubu administration.
“Who will easily forget the ring-fencing of hundreds of state-owned companies and investments through an opaque privatisation process, the massive diversion of oil revenue into private foreign bank accounts as well as the unconscionable sale and concession of Nigeria’s power sector to unqualified and incompetent proxy companies,” it noted.
