Poor decision making may have thrown the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) into a serious confusion in its continued search for a new coach for the Super Eagles.
SCORENigeria gathered that serious pressure is mounting on the NFF leadership over who should be named the Super Eagles coach after it dilly dallied over such an appointment when former coach Jose Peseiro parted ways with the team since the end of February.
Some top NFF officials told SCORENigeria that they now regret not appointing a coach of their choice soon after Peseiro left the job.
According to one of the officials, the long delay in filling the vacuum by the NFF has attracted many interest groups now wishing to fill it with their own candidate.
According to the online platform, the search for a new Super Eagles coach took a dramatic turn on Thursday when an NFF delegation led by President Ibrahim Gusau met with the Sports Minister John Enoh, who allegedly overturned the recommendation of the NFF technical committee that put forward three foreign coaches to be considered to head the team.
The minister was said to have made his own recommendations, while at the same time telling the NFF chieftains that the final decision lies squarely with them.
“If we had made an appointment soon after Peseiro left, we would have done so on our own terms and given the job to coach of our choice,” the official lamented. “Now as it stands, we may be forced to appoint some other people’s candidate and should he fail, we will still be held responsible.”
Another official likened the present situation to when another Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, arm twisted the NFF to get Emmanuel Amuneke to assist Augustine Eguavoen and in the end Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
